Released on 23 Sep 2021 16:16PM
Road users can look forward to enhanced traffic movement in Maseru city once the project to retrofit traffic lights and install additional traffic lights is completed.
The scope of the project entails improvement and rehabilitation of existing 17 traffic lights in Maseru city and installation of new ones at seven intersections. Through this project, existing traffic lights will also be incorporated into the new traffic signal management system.
New traffic lights will be installed at the following intersections:
• SA High Commission and Kingsway Road
• Kingsway Road and Mpilo Boulevard (near Basotho Hat)
• Lerotholi Polytechnic and Moshoeshoe Road (Matsoatlareng)
• Stadium Road and Main North 1 (near Lebo’s Off Sales)
• Hi-Fi City and Betloane (Maseru East)
• Maqalika and DLM Complex (A1)
• Mohalalitoe and Thabong Road (near Maseru Cash & Carry)
The four months’ project will be undertaken by Siemens Mobility (Pty) Ltd on behalf of the Roads Directorate. The project is funded by the Road Fund to a tune of approximately M15 Million comprising purchase of equipment and installation.
The project will significantly improve mobility, ease congestion and enhance road safety at intersections around the city.  The retrofit and upgrading of traffic lights will shorten travelling times, unblock intersections at peak hours and enhance compliance with road traffic regulations orderly movement of conflicting traffic flows.

The existing traffic lights were installed in the late 90s. The outdated traffic lights components and traffic management system as well as the increase of vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Maseru roads prompted the need for an efficient traffic lights system around the city.
