The reconstruction and full rehabilitation of the A5 road from St. Michael’s to Roma, including the 2km loop road via St. Joseph’s Hospital to Ha Mafefooane has commenced.

This significant project has been awarded to China Geo Engineering Corporation under the supervision of Mafube/SM Consulting Engineers Joint Venture and involves the comprehensive rehabilitation of the 8km road.

Valued at M140,181,315.01, the 15-months project aims to improve travel to the National University of Lesotho, St Joseph's Hospital and villages around the Roma valley while also reducing travel time between Maseru and Qacha’s Nek districts. The reconstruction of the road will not only improve the safety and efficiency of passenger travel but also facilitate the smooth transportation of goods and services, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of Lesotho.

The scope of work includes road widening and construction of climbing lanes on some road sections as well as construction of gabion walls and concrete-lined drainage. Additionally, the project entails the installation of new road markings and signs, construction of new cross-drainage structures, extension of paved pedestrian walkways, construction of bus bays and installation of solar-powered street lighting.

To ensure smooth and timely implementation of the project, in January 2025, the Roads Directorate in collaboration with the contractor, commenced engagement sessions with key stakeholders, including the Maseru District Administrator and street vendors operating on the road reserve.

The public is notified that temporary traffic delays are anticipated during the works. Therefore, all road users are urged to exercise patience and adhere to all on-site traffic signage.
