Released on 27 Aug 2025 08:33AM
MEDIA RELEASE

For immediate release

The ongoing solar lighting project along a 3.5km section of the A3 road within the Thaba-Tseka central business district is 90% complete.

Valued at M11,129,667.16, the project is set to improve road user safety and visibility through the installation of approximately 230 solar lights. This enhanced lighting will have a positive effect on the local economy by promoting business activity and deterring crime in the area. The project is carried out by the Pheko/Clean Energy Joint Venture under the supervision of the Roads Directorate.

Through the project, which is undertaken as a pilot, the Directorate aims to shift from conventional streetlights to a more sustainable, solar-powered alternative to reduce environmental impact and lower the operational costs of street lighting.

To improve road safety on major roads, the Roads Directorate, with funding from the Road Fund, will be implementing 14 additional street lighting rehabilitation and maintenance projects in the current financial year. These projects, some of which are already in progress, will take place on various roads in the Maseru, Berea, Mafeteng, and Butha-Buthe districts. The projects include the following: -
