The Roads Directorate has commenced the rehabilitation of a 12 km section of the A4 Road from Ha Mpiti to the Qacha’s Nek Border Gate. The M181,833,330.73 project has been awarded to Qingjian Group Co. Ltd, with a construction timeline of nine months followed by a 12-month defects liability period.
The project is expected to stimulate the local economy through improved mobility and employment creation opportunities for the Qacha’s Nek community. Upon completion, this key corridor will improve cross-border trade between Lesotho and South Africa, improve tourism as well as facilitate transportation of wool and mohair products. The rehabilitated section is designed to minimize travel disruptions and reduce the high vehicle maintenance costs.
Beyond the road’s economic impact, the project will ensure safer access to essential services including schools, clinics and government service centres.
The scope of the project includes the full reconstruction of failed road sections and the application of asphalt overlays on structurally intact sections. To combat the challenges posed by the region’s climate, the contractor will improve the drainage, replace damaged culverts and install new ones to withstand heavy storms while minimizing erosion and landslides. The project also includes the installation of road signs and road markings.
The project forms part of the Roads Directorate’s broader strategy for asset recovery aimed at ensuring the sustainable performance and longevity of Lesotho's national road assets.
