A World Bank implementation support mission led by Ms. Wei Yan visited Lesotho last week as part of ongoing support to the Lesotho Integrated Transport, Trade and Logistics Project (LITTL) which aims to enhance Lesotho’s trade competitiveness and transport efficiency.

 The mission, which took place from 4 to 8 May 2026, engaged Government counterparts and key stakeholders to review the implementation progress, address operational challenges and support the timely delivery of project activities. The mission’s main objectives were to:

(i) provide technical and operational support to ensure effective project implementation with a focus on expediting procurement for all contracts and resolving key challenges under Component 1 of the project;

(ii) clarify implementation arrangements for the aviation component (Component 4) and facilitate smooth execution among the Roads Directorate, Airport Services and the wider aviation sector; and

(iii) review the latest implementation progress under Component 2, particularly in relation to customs administration, trade facilitation and the Smart One Stop Border Post (OSBP) initiative for the Maseru and Maputsoe border crossings.

As one of the mission’s key activities, the team met with the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Honourable Matjato Moteane to provide an update on implementation progress across key components of the LITTL Project. Discussions also focused on potential areas for further engagement in support of the transport sector.

The meeting was attended by the Roads Directorate Director General, Mr. Teboho Mokhoane, together with the Executive team. Also present was Ms. ‘Nopi Linkonyane, Director Airport Services.

During the week-long visit, the mission conducted site visits to Moshoeshoe I International Airport, the A1 Road at Lekokoaneng, earmarked for spot improvements as well as Ha Nyenye intersection in Maputsoe and the A8 intersection in Hlotse which are scheduled for upgrades.

The LITTL Project is aimed at improving climate-resilient regional connectivity along the Katse–Thaba-Tseka Road corridor, increase logistics efficiency and strengthen border processes in Maseru, Maputsoe, Caledonspoort and Qacha’s Nek. In addition, the project aims to enhance the functionality, safety and security of Moshoeshoe I International Airport, while strengthening the aviation sector’s capacity to meet international standards.

The project is financed by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) with USD 80 million, in partnership with OPEC which is providing USD 40 million.
