MOSHOESHOE AND KOFI ANNAN ROADS REHABILITATION HAS COMMENCED

Rehabilitation works on Moshoeshoe and Kofi Annan roads have commenced. The project which will be carried out in two phases is aimed at enhancing traffic flow and road safety on the two major Maseru city bypasses.

The 18-month project, awarded to Unik Construction Botswana Pty Ltd at a cost of M283,521,859.05, will be completed in February 2025.

The project involves milling and resurfacing of the entire project road, repairing of base layer failures through excavation and reusing of the existing asphalt surface (in situ recycling). The project will also address existing potholes, edge breaks, and cracks as well as improve storm water drainage systems by constructing new subsoil drains, cleaning and inspecting concrete culverts, replacing selected side-drains, and increasing culvert sizes.

The project will also formalise the Seputana cross junction, while also addressing some ponding problems at various intersections along the Kofi Annan road. Drainage problems on Thabong traffic circle, Lekhaloaneng and Ha Motšoeneng intersections will also be addressed under the project.

Other ancillary works entailed in the project scope are provision of new edge beams, removal and replacement of damaged guardrails, reinstatement of road signs and road markings to improve visibility and safety.

The 20-kilometre Kofi Annan road (A7) connects Kingsway road from Maseru Bridge with the A2 road at Masianokeng. Built in the late 1990s by the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, Kofi Annan road by-passes Maseru city, traversing the Thetsane and Tikoe industrial areas and numerous villages. On the other hand, the 4-kilometre Moshoeshoe road which also by-passes the city, serving the Maseru industrial area was last rehabilitated in 2007.

Through the rehabilitation of the two roads, the Roads Directorate aims to contribute to build enabling infrastructure to stimulate private sector investment for inclusive growth and job creation, which is the Key Priority Area III as set out in the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP II).
